Why no subtitles on 4K discs?

A while back I noticed something strange while buying some 4K movies. What should have been Nordic releases should of course have had Nordic subtitles like Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. But only the included Blu-Ray disc had them, not the 4K disc.
I didn’t think too much of it then. I was like “Fine, ok, I’ll keep them anyway”.
This was way back when I bought a lot of the first 3 Thor movies last year. Thor: Ragnarok did not have any Nordic subtitles on the 4K disc, while the other 2 movies had.

Last month I bought a lot of 11 4K movies. I didn’t think much of it at the time, until a few days ago. I started to check the back of the movies, just to see if it had any Swedish subtitles. Most of them had. But there were a few that had not. And even one of them was an Italian release (but with the subs). I actually had no idea about that! And yet another one said it was only English subs on both the 4K disc and the Blu-Ray disc but turned out it had more subs, like the Nordic ones.
I honestly started to get a bit tired of this phenomenon. No Nordic texts on Nordic releases. And it got me wondering, maybe they were not even released here from the start?

The 4 movies that has to be replaced

I started to do some digging about this, and it turns out that the Swedish distributors don’t put the Nordic subs on some 4K discs! No one could answer why in the forum I found where people had discussed this back in 2018.
I continued to look for answers but I could not find any more information anywhere. So I decided to ask ChatGPT, just for fun. And I was surprised! I actually didn’t think I would get a valid answer, but I actually think I got it, and yes, it all makes sense now. It’s a few reasons, so let’s break it down!

International Distributors & Standardization
Many 4K UHD releases are standardized for multiple markets to save on production costs. Sometimes, studios prioritize English subtitles (or a few major languages) for broader compatibility.

Licensing & Rights Issues
Subtitles are often considered separate licensing elements. If the distributor didn’t secure Swedish subtitle rights or found it too costly, they might exclude them.

Nordic Market Bundling
Some releases are made for the entire Nordic region, but instead of including all languages, they may favor Danish, Norwegian, or Finnish subtitles instead. This happens because of deals with different distributors in different countries.

Blu-ray vs. 4K UHD Differences
While standard Blu-rays almost always include Swedish subtitles in Sweden, 4K UHD discs often have different subtitle and audio options, as they are often identical across multiple regions (e.g., Europe or global releases).

Assumption That 4K Buyers Prefer English
Studios might assume that people buying 4K UHD are more likely to watch in the original language without subtitles or that they understand English well enough to not need Swedish subtitles.

A part of my 4K stack

After learning this I checked all my 4K movies I have not watched yet, and there’s 4 movies that do not have anything but English and other languages on them.
This made me decide to be more careful when buying used movies from the auction site I’m using. I need to make sure it has the subs, otherwise I will just buy the standard Blu-Ray.
And the ones I already have without, I’m just gonna sell them and just get the standalone Blu-Rays of them instead. No need to have the 4K release at all.
While I am still fine watching without subtitles, I still want that option. Especially as it can be easier for me to focus sometimes. So to me it’s more worth it to get the releases with the correct subs.

Goals for 2025

A few weeks have passed into 2025 and I wonder how many out there have been keeping up with their New Year’s resolutions. I even made some myself when I was younger. Did I stick to them? Probably not for very long if I know myself correctly.

I have stopped making resolutions because there’s no point. Not for me. I seem to have a hard time committing to keep going with things like that. It starts to feel like a chore, and that takes away all the fun for me.

Even though I do not do resolutions anymore, I decided to at least give myself a few goals to work towards. And mentally, that feels like a more achievable thing to do. Even if some things might take longer than others, they should be achieved this year at least.

Here’s my list of a few goals so far:

  • Read more books
  • Buy a new bed
  • Clean out the storeroom

I have not read that many books in the past 10 years to be honest. I am a slow reader and I tend to read word for word. I’ve thought of a way to get through more books though, and that is to read at least 50 pages every single day whenever I have started a book. That way I will be able to read a lot more and finish a book in 1-2 weeks. Which would have taken me months before. But this is definitely a start to something better. Also gonna try to learn how to speed up my reading.

Buying a new bed is a top priority. Mine is 20+ years old, and it feels like I’m sleeping in a bowl. It hurts my back, my shoulders and my hips. So I think it’s definitely time to change it! I think I might have a new one within maybe 3 months. Update on that will be coming in the future.

The storeroom in the basement really needs a good clean! I have placed so many things down there through the years and it has just piled up. Last year I was able to throw away some things, and it freed up some space but I have a lot left that needs to be gone.
So the goal for this year is to go through a bit more of my things in the apartment (which I actually should do in a few days) and whatever has to go to the dump will be put in my storeroom. And I guess there’s a few things I can give away to a second-hand store.
And then, when the weather has become warmer, it’s time to rent a trailer, load it with the things from the basement and drive it away for good.
After that I have some plans for my storeroom, but it is not necessarily a goal for this year. Not a goal at all, but something I want to do in time. And that is to build my own wine rack. Better to store flasks in the basement rather in the apartment as they should be kept cool, and flasks with corks should be lying down. The apartment gets really hot as soon as there’s no clouds and the sun warms this place up. Last summer it was up to 34C in my kitchen, so it’s definitely not an ideal environment.

So here’s my goals for this year! There should not be any issues to fix them, to my knowledge. It’s not many, but it’s always something.
